Throbbing Gristle mark 50 years at the ICA with free anniversary gathering
The Institute of Contemporary Arts hosted a free day-long TG50 event with surviving members Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti, marking 50 years since the band's provocative 'Prostitution' show.
The Institute of Contemporary Arts on The Mall hosted a free day-long event on Sunday 18 October 2026 to mark exactly 50 years since Throbbing Gristle's incendiary debut 'Prostitution' at the same venue in 1976. The TG50 gathering, organised with Mute Records, ran from midday and featured film screenings, in-conversation sessions and listening sessions in the main theatre, with surviving founding members Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti appearing in conversation with journalist Luke Turner. Fans gathered to share stories, pick up a run of exclusive anniversary merchandise and meet Carter and Tutti at a signing. The original 1976 show at the ICA was condemned in Parliament by Conservative MP Nicholas Fairbairn, who called the band 'wreckers of civilisation', and became a landmark moment in British industrial and performance art. A limited-edition USB box set, TG24+, containing 36 newly mastered live performances, was announced for 4 December. The anniversary brought a crowd of long-time fans, music writers and curators to The Mall for one of London's most-anticipated small cultural events of the autumn.
