NYC Autumn Foliage Expected to Be a Fall Feast This Year
A wetter-than-average summer and gradual cool-down are setting up New York City for an exceptionally vivid leaf season, with peak colour expected in late October across Central Park and beyond.
Gothamist reported that New York City is headed for a particularly spectacular autumn foliage season in 2026. A wetter-than-average summer gave trees a strong growing season, building up the pigment reserves that produce the most vivid colour displays as temperatures cool. Experts and foliage trackers said a gradual rather than sudden temperature drop, which allows pigments to develop slowly and brilliantly, is also working in the city's favour. Peak colour is expected in the second half of October and into early November, with coastal areas peaking later. Prospect Park in Brooklyn and Central Park in Manhattan are cited as prime viewing spots, alongside Inwood Hill Park in Upper Manhattan and the Staten Island Greenbelt. The article notes that tree canopy in lower-income neighbourhoods, historically thinner, will show less dramatic colour, underscoring longstanding urban green-space equity gaps. The piece recommends New Yorkers head out in coming days to catch the display at its most vivid.
