Berlin's Left Party Struggles to Act on Emde Despite Repeated Declarations

For the second time in eleven days, Die Linke's Berlin faction leadership has declared it has no shared basis for cooperation with lawmaker Vanessa Emde — yet again without taking any concrete action.

Vanessa Emde, a lawmaker for Die Linke in Berlin's state parliament, won her Neukölln constituency outright with 46.2 percent of direct votes — nearly one in two voters in the district. She ran a campaign centred on Palestine solidarity and has publicly questioned the right of existence of states. Now Berlin's Linke appears eager to remove her, but the path to doing so is proving difficult.

For the second time within eleven days, the faction leadership has announced that it sees no shared basis for cooperation with Emde. And for the second time, that declaration has produced no concrete consequence. Instead, party committees have been tasked with deliberating further steps.

The reason for the party's hesitation may lie in its own base. Emde is no accidental outsider: she was formally put forward as the party's candidate and was then elected by thousands of Berliners. Moving against her risks a direct conflict with precisely the grassroots supporters in Neukölln who have delivered major electoral successes for Die Linke. The dispute lays bare a deeper tension within the party over how it positions itself on politically charged issues — one that cannot easily be resolved by committee deliberation alone.
