Mayor Hails 'Largest Devolution of Powers in a Generation' After Budget
Mayor Sadiq Khan welcomed the government's Budget as delivering the largest devolution of powers to London in a generation, unlocking major transport and housing projects.
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan described the government's Budget as "a really positive and significant day for London," calling it "the largest devolution of powers to London seen in a generation." The Budget enables London to retain more of the revenue it raises locally, which Khan said would unlock major infrastructure projects including the West London Orbital, the Bakerloo Line Extension, and the Euston knowledge quarter development — schemes expected to support tens of thousands of new homes and jobs. The government also said it will help bring cross-channel rail services to Stratford International, making it "truly international for the first time" and opening up opportunities for jobs, investment and tourism. Khan welcomed action to address the cost of living and energy bills, noting that support for rising energy costs would be vital for many Londoners as the conflict in the Middle East continues to affect the global economy. He also highlighted new investment to tackle rough sleeping, build more affordable homes, and support young Londoners through skills training and employment opportunities, saying the Budget showed "a real commitment to building a fairer, safer, greener and more prosperous London for everyone."
