Angel Tube Station to Become Exit-Only at Weekends from Early 2027
Transport for London has announced Angel underground station will close to entering passengers on weekends and bank holidays from early 2027, as its ageing escalators — the longest on the entire network — require extensive repair work.
Transport for London has announced that Angel station on the Northern line will become exit-only during weekends and bank holidays from early 2027. Passengers will be able to leave the station during those periods but will not be able to enter it, and will need to find an alternative starting point for their journey. Weekday operations will continue as normal to limit disruption to commuters.
The change is driven by the deteriorating condition of the station's four escalators. Two of them run between the ticket hall and mid-concourse level — one in each direction — and make up the longest escalator run on the entire London Underground. A further pair connects the mid-concourse to the platform level. Some of the escalators are nearly 35 years old and, according to Richard Jones, director of asset performance delivery for London Underground, are 'becoming less reliable and increasingly difficult to maintain.'
Jones said the exit-only arrangement would extend the working life of the escalators and allow more time to plan next steps, with design work on a full replacement programme set to begin this autumn.
TfL recommends that passengers use buses to reach King's Cross St Pancras, Old Street, or Highbury & Islington stations as alternatives. An exact start date has not yet been confirmed beyond 'early 2027.'
