NYU Pledges $6 Million Over Four Years to Washington Square Park
New York University announced a $6 million, four-year commitment to support the maintenance and restoration of Washington Square Park, the Greenwich Village green space that serves as the university's unofficial campus quad.
New York University announced on October 18, 2026 a $6 million, four-year commitment to the preservation and enhancement of Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village. The funds will support New York City Parks Department staff, horticulture and enforcement teams, and potential lawn restoration work within the park. NYU has contributed to the park's upkeep for more than 20 years; the new pledge more than doubles the university's previous investment level. NYU President Linda G. Mills cited the park's central role as a gathering place for NYU students, faculty and employees. Will Morrison, executive director of the Washington Square Park Conservancy, said the university is 'trusting the Conservancy and the Parks Department to assess what the needs are in a given year.' The Conservancy coordinates volunteer clean-up days, arts programming and advocacy for the park. The announcement comes as the park continues to be a focal point of tension over public safety, use and neighbourhood access in Greenwich Village.
