LAIKA's 'Wildwood' Opens in Cinemas Worldwide
LAIKA's long-awaited stop-motion animated feature 'Wildwood', directed by Travis Knight, opened in wide theatrical release on 23 October, following a girl who ventures into a perilous enchanted forest near Portland to rescue her kidnapped baby brother.
On 23 October 2026, LAIKA Studios released 'Wildwood' in cinemas worldwide, marking the studio's first wide theatrical outing in several years. Directed by Travis Knight and based on the bestselling children's novel by Colin Meloy, the PG-13 stop-motion dark fantasy follows 12-year-old Prue McKeel, who plunges into the mysterious, rule-bound Impassable Wilderness — a vast wild forest just beyond the city of Portland, Oregon — after her baby brother is snatched by a murder of crows. The film features an all-star voice cast including Peyton Elizabeth Lee as Prue, Jacob Tremblay, Carey Mulligan, Mahershala Ali and Awkwafina. LAIKA is celebrated for handcrafted stop-motion films such as Coraline and Kubo and the Two Strings, and 'Wildwood' represents a return to the studio's signature blend of hand-built sets and 3D-printed character faces. The film received positive advance buzz for its lush visual world and its themes of bravery and family bonds. Its opening on 23 October placed it as a major family event film heading into the Halloween season.
