Aamir Khan Joins 25th-Anniversary Screening of 'Lagaan' at Singapore International Film Festival

Bollywood star Aamir Khan and director Ashutosh Gowariker appeared live at the 37th Singapore International Film Festival on 23 October for a special 25th-anniversary screening of 'Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India', with Khan also receiving the festival's Screen Icon Award.

On 23 October 2026, the 37th Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF) hosted a landmark event at GV VivoCity: a 25th-anniversary Special Presentation screening of 'Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India' (2001), the Oscar-nominated Hindi epic directed by Ashutosh Gowariker and produced by and starring Aamir Khan. Both Khan and Gowariker appeared in person at the festival for the screening, which is part of the festival's 'Landmark' strand showcasing seven recently restored international classics. Separately, the SGIFF is presenting its prestigious Screen Icon Award to Aamir Khan at its 37th edition, recognising his decades-long career and contribution to world cinema. The 37th SGIFF opened with South Korean thriller 'The Assassin(s)', directed by Hur Jin-ho and starring Yoo Hae-jin, Park Hae-il and Lee Min-ho. 'Lagaan', which follows Indian villagers who challenge British colonial rulers to a game of cricket to avoid paying an oppressive land tax, remains one of the most celebrated Indian films ever made and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film in 2002. The festival runs across multiple Singapore venues and screens over 100 films in its 2026 edition.
