Görli 24/7 Issues Ultimatum to Berlin Senate Over Closed Görlitzer Park Bridge
The neighbourhood initiative Görli 24/7 has given the Berlin Senate and Deutsche Bahn until midnight Sunday to reopen a footbridge over the Landwehrkanal at Görlitzer Park — closed since July due to corrosion — threatening to open it themselves if officials fail to act.
The neighbourhood group Görli 24/7 has formally issued an ultimatum to the Berlin Senate and Deutsche Bahn, demanding that a pedestrian and cycle bridge over the Landwehrkanal at Görlitzer Park be reopened by midnight Sunday, or the activists say they will take matters into their own hands and open it themselves. The bridge, an important crossing linking the Treptow-Köpenick side of the canal to Görlitzer Park in Kreuzberg, has been closed since July 2026. Deutsche Bahn justifies the closure on the grounds of structural corrosion damage and the absence of a valid traffic-safety certificate. The activists dispute that any genuine collapse risk exists, pointing out that the pathways running directly beneath the over-100-year-old iron structure remain open to the public. A formal structural assessment commissioned by the authorities is not expected to deliver its recommendations until the end of 2026. The closure forces residents and park visitors to take considerable detours. The Tagesspiegel article of 21 October 2026 reports that Görli 24/7 regards the months-long closure as a failure of public administration to prioritise the quality of life of those who rely on the crossing.
