OPDC Unveils 'Park Royal: Then and Now' Community Mural at Masons Green Lane Subway

The Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation has unveiled a new mural by local artist Andrew Werdna at the Masons Green Lane Subway, a key pedestrian gateway under the A40 into Park Royal in west London.

The Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation (OPDC) has unveiled a new public artwork titled 'Park Royal: Then and Now' at the Masons Green Lane Subway — an important thoroughfare under the A40 serving as a main entrance to Park Royal for people who live and work in the area. Commissioned and funded by OPDC, the mural forms part of the organisation's ongoing commitment to improve public spaces in and around the Old Oak and Park Royal area.

At the end of 2025, OPDC launched an open call inviting local artists to help transform the subway into a brighter, safer and more welcoming space. West London-based muralist and illustrator Andrew Werdna was commissioned in Spring 2026. His design draws on the area's local landmarks and rich industrial history, with motifs shaped by photographs taken by community members who were invited to document a typical day in Park Royal. Werdna also brought in local young people from the nearby Minerva Works Circular Economy School to assist with painting the mural.

Working alongside Transport for London as landowner, the project also delivered improved lighting and CCTV for the subway, enhancing safety and accessibility. At a launch event, OPDC CEO Matthew Carpen visited the site with the artist to celebrate the work's completion and hear the story behind its design. They were joined by local Ealing ward councillors who supported the subway's transformation from the outset. Werdna has a decade of experience in community-led public art, and his previous work includes the Great Western Road Overbridge in Westminster — described as one of London's largest community-designed commissions.
