Hochul and Blakeman Campaign Across New York City, Trading Arguments on Affordability
Governor Kathy Hochul and Republican challenger Bruce Blakeman held separate campaign events across New York City on Friday, both centering their messages on affordability, taxes, and public safety as early voting is already underway in the governor's race.
Governor Kathy Hochul and Republican challenger Bruce Blakeman took their campaigns to opposite corners of New York City on Friday, each making the case to voters on affordability, taxes, and public safety as the race for governor heads into its final stretch.
Hochul appeared at McCarren Park alongside New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, telling the crowd that Mamdani is "more popular than Bruce Blakeman across the damn state of New York." She focused on the financial pressures families face at the end of each month, pointing to her administration's investments in childcare assistance. Mamdani argued that Blakeman's policies would make life "more expensive and more difficult for working families." The joint appearance was aimed in part at boosting turnout among younger voters; a survey by AARP and Gotham Polling & Analytics found that voters aged 50 and older could outnumber younger voters by roughly 1.3 million in this year's general election.
Blakeman, meanwhile, met with business owners in Manhattan's Chinatown, where he said residents are "choking on the taxes, congestion pricing." He blamed Hochul for rising housing and energy costs and criticized Mayor Mamdani for not directing more funds toward hiring new police officers despite receiving $5 billion in state money. "I can tell everybody that help is on the way," Blakeman said.
Voters on both sides said affordability and crime are shaping their decisions. With early voting already underway, some New Yorkers said they plan to cast their ballots before Election Day, while others intend to vote in person on Election Day itself.
