Retired NYPD Detective Posts Bail in George Washington Bridge Road Rage Killing
Victor Romero, a 62-year-old retired NYPD detective accused of fatally shooting a 46-year-old man in a road rage incident on the George Washington Bridge, posted $1 million bail on Friday, drawing outrage from the victim's family who called it a miscarriage of justice.
Victor Romero, 62, a retired NYPD narcotics detective, posted $1 million bail on Friday, October 24, 2026, one day after being arraigned on a first-degree manslaughter charge in the death of Koran Irvine, 46, on the George Washington Bridge. Irvine was fatally shot in an apparent road rage incident after the two vehicles were involved in a near-collision on the ramp from West 179th Street in Washington Heights leading onto the upper level of the bridge. Surveillance video showed Romero's black Range Rover speeding to catch up with Irvine's Volkswagen before a single shot was fired, striking Irvine in the right shoulder; he crashed into the median and died at a hospital. Romero, who retired from the NYPD after being shot in a robbery at his family's laundromat in East Flatbush in 2000, turned himself in for questioning on Wednesday and was initially arrested on a murder charge; prosecutors reduced the charge to manslaughter at Thursday's arraignment. The family of Irvine, a father of children from Rockland County, denounced the decision as a 'miscarriage of justice' and demanded a murder charge be reinstated. The story received extensive coverage on October 25 as Romero's bail posting became public.
