Zehlendorf School Wants Cars Banned, Children Dance in Protest Against Parent Taxis
At a Steglitz-Zehlendorf primary school, children danced in the street to protest 'parent taxis' and demand a car-free school zone with bollards or barriers.
Pupils and parents at the Athene-Grundschule in Berlin-Steglitz-Zehlendorf staged a dance protest on 14/15 October 2026, demanding that cars be banned from the stretch of road in front of the school. 'Why not retractable bollards or a barrier?' asked parents, who have long complained about dangerous Elterntaxi traffic – parents dropping their children directly at the gate in SUVs. The school wants a 'Schulstraße' car-free zone secured by hardware, not just signs, after a series of near-misses with young pupils. Dancing children were part of a creative action to put pressure on the district office. The borough is examining the plans but has not yet promised a timetable. The protest fits into Berlin's wider push for school streets, which campaigners say are too slowly rolled out.
