Walter Koenig, Star Trek's Ensign Chekov, Dies at 90

Walter Koenig, who played the Russian navigator Pavel Chekov in the original Star Trek TV series and seven films, died on Sunday at his home in North Hollywood, aged 90.

Walter Koenig, the actor who brought Ensign Pavel Chekov to life aboard the USS Enterprise, died Sunday night at his home in the North Hollywood neighbourhood of Los Angeles. He was 90. His talent representative, Zachery McGinnis, confirmed the news, noting that Koenig was surrounded by his daughter and niece at the time of his death.

Koenig appeared in NBC's Star Trek, which ran from 1966 to 1969, and later reprised his role as the cheerful Russian navigator in seven Star Trek feature films beginning in 1979. His character held symbolic importance as the only Enterprise bridge officer from the Communist bloc, embodying the show's hopeful vision of nations cooperating far into the future.

Away from acting, Koenig wrote scripts for television shows including Family and The Incredible Hulk, penned a Star Trek book called Chekov's Enterprise in 1980, and taught part-time at UCLA. He also made occasional appearances in the 1990s syndicated series Babylon 5 and took a role in computer games, including the 1995 CD-ROM title Maximum Surge.

Born on 14 September 1936 in Chicago, Koenig graduated from UCLA in 1958 and trained at The Neighbourhood Playhouse in New York before landing his first television roles in the early 1960s.

Castmate George Takei paid tribute on social media, saying: "Walter was more than Chekov. He was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend." Koenig had served as best man at Takei's 2008 wedding. His representative said he "understood what Star Trek meant to people and embraced the community that grew around it."
