Polar Air Could Bring Germany First Hard Frost by Early November

European weather models consistently show a cold polar air mass arriving in Germany around 10 November, potentially pushing night temperatures as low as minus 10 degrees Celsius.

Meteorologist Dominik Jung of wetter.net, writing in his weather column, reports a persistent cold signal in the ECMWF model pointing to a significant wintry change around 10 November — just before Saint Martin's Day on 11 November. The model shows a strong high-pressure system building over the North Sea while a low sits over the Baltic, together channelling dry, clear polar continental air from the northeast across Germany. At around 1,500 metres altitude, temperatures could fall to between minus 6 and minus 10 degrees Celsius, roughly ten degrees below the seasonal norm. At ground level, nighttime lows of minus 5 to minus 10 degrees are expected especially in eastern regions and the upland ranges, with peaks staying below freezing even during the day. Snow is unlikely because the high pressure suppresses precipitation, though light flurries may occur along the Baltic coast. The cold signal has appeared repeatedly across successive model runs, which Jung says makes it worth taking seriously despite the two-week lead time. He also notes a potential stratospheric warming event over the Arctic in early November that could intensify any subsequent cold wave, though the German Weather Service stresses this is not automatic and any ground-level effect would arrive ten to fifteen days after such a disruption.
