Union Berlin frustrate Dortmund in a goalless battle

1. FC Union Berlin earn a hard-fought 0-0 draw at home against last season's runners-up Borussia Dortmund in a cards-filled Bundesliga game.

Berliner Zeitung's match report, prominent on 18 October 2026, celebrates 1. FC Union Berlin's goalless draw with Borussia Dortmund. Union coach Mauro Lustrinelli kept the eleven that won the previous week, making just one half-time change when Emmanuel Latte Lath replaced Kastriot Imeri. The match was rough from the first seconds: referee Daniel Schlager nearly showed a red card after Ethan Nwaneri's foul on Tom Rothe but settled for yellow, and five yellow cards were handed out before half-time. Union's defence neutralised Dortmund's attack; Tim Skarke had the clearest chance in the 59th minute when he was played clear on goal but shot well over. The result gives Union five points for the season and keeps them in the fight after a tough start, with the home crowd at An der Alten Försterei celebrating the point against a Champions League side.
