Microsoft Offers Voluntary Buyouts to 60,000 Workers as AI Reshapes Its Workforce

Microsoft is offering voluntary exit packages to roughly 60,000 employees — about 27 percent of its global workforce — as the company accelerates its AI investment and restructures teams for efficiency.

Microsoft announced on October 26, 2026, that it is offering voluntary buyout packages to approximately 60,000 employees, equal to about 27 percent of its total workforce of 223,000. Eligible staff are at the vice president level and below in selected teams across the United States, Canada, India, and the United Kingdom. Divisions taking part include Xbox, Windows, Copilot, and Finance, while roles in data centres, sales, and marketing are excluded. Employees must decide by early December 2026; those who accept will leave on 31 December on terms similar to Microsoft's standard severance. The company has been pouring tens of billions of dollars into new AI data-centre capacity globally — a capital outlay that has squeezed margins — and says the buyouts are designed to redirect headcount costs toward higher-productivity roles centred on AI development and deployment. The announcement comes as several major technology companies have been reassessing the size of their non-technical back-office teams in light of productivity gains from generative AI tools. Analysts said the scale of the offer was unusual even by Silicon Valley standards and would likely set a precedent for how other large corporations manage their AI transition.
