Driver Shot and Killed on George Washington Bridge

Port Authority police officers responded just after 7 p.m. Tuesday to reports of a one-vehicle crash on the westbound upper level of the George Washington Bridge, closer to the New Jersey side. They found the driver with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the head. The victim was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. Investigators believe the shooting occurred while the vehicle was in motion on the bridge. No arrest had been made as of early Wednesday and police were actively searching for a suspect. The incident prompted a large law-enforcement response on one of the world's busiest crossings, causing traffic disruptions. The Port Authority Police Department and other agencies launched a joint investigation. The GWB connects Upper Manhattan with Fort Lee, New Jersey, and carries approximately 100 million vehicles per year.
