Colorado Man Pans for Gold for Months to Hand-Make His Girlfriend's Engagement Ring
Jack Vulcani spent months collecting gold flecks from Colorado rivers, had them cast into a ring by a local jeweller, and his girlfriend Joanne's tearful surprise proposal reaction went viral on October 27.
Jack Vulcani of Wheat Ridge, Colorado, spent months wading through rivers across the state with a gold pan, collecting tiny flecks of the precious metal with an unlikely goal: making an engagement ring entirely from gold he had found himself. Once he had gathered enough, he brought the collection to local jeweller Zak Allen, who had never attempted such a project before. Allen recalled thinking that's a new thing, but agreed to cast the gathered flakes into a ring. For the proposal, Vulcani took his girlfriend Joanne on a hike and showed her a video documenting the months-long gold-panning process. Halfway through the clip she realised what she was watching and broke down crying. I blacked out a little bit, but it was a really special moment, she later said. Vulcani, notably humble about the reaction his story generated online, said he just wanted to make her day, not crush anybody else's dreams. The story spread widely on October 27 across NBC and ABC affiliate stations including KING5 and KVUE, picked up nationally and internationally, and was republished by dozens of outlets including Yahoo Lifestyle and AsiaNet News. As a final detail that delighted the internet further, Vulcani revealed he had enough gold left over to cast a matching wedding band for himself, meaning both rings would share the same Colorado river gold.
