Blanka Dörfel Nearly Breaks German Record on Frankfurt Marathon Debut
Twenty-four-year-old Blanka Dörfel from Wandlitz near Berlin came agonisingly close to the German women's marathon record at the Frankfurt Marathon — on her very first official start over the classic distance.
Spectators lining the Frankfurt Marathon course were left open-mouthed as an unfamiliar face threatened to rewrite German athletics history. The question spreading through the crowds was straightforward: who is this young German woman attacking the national record in her debut marathon? The answer: Blanka Dörfel, 24 years old, from Wandlitz near Berlin.
What made the performance even more extraordinary was the weather. Temperatures were so biting that Dörfel could not even squeeze her energy gels during the race — and yet she still only narrowly missed the German record. That she could come so close to national record territory under such punishing conditions left analysts struggling for comparison.
Marathon debuts of this nature are almost unheard of in Germany. Observers described it as a debut like no other, and with better conditions on the horizon, the question is no longer whether Dörfel can break the German record — but when.
