Fence on Closed Görlitzer Park Bridge Damaged After Activist Ultimatum

Unknown individuals damaged the security fence on the Lohmühlenbrücke near Görlitzer Park hours after an activist group's reopening deadline passed, with residents reportedly filling gaps in the decking with sand. Police repaired the fence overnight but made no arrests.

The Lohmühlenbrücke, a pedestrian and cycle bridge over the Landwehr Canal between Treptow and Kreuzberg, has been closed since July 2026 due to severe corrosion damage. Deutsche Bahn, which owns the structure, argues it is so deteriorated that it must be demolished rather than repaired. The activist group "Görli 24/7" issued an ultimatum last Tuesday demanding the bridge reopen by Sunday at midnight; when that deadline passed, unknown individuals damaged the security fence on the Kreuzberg side, and residents reportedly began filling holes in the decking with sand to make the bridge walkable again. Police were alerted at around 3:00 a.m. on Monday, confirmed the damage, and repaired the fence. No criminal charges were filed. By Monday morning a patrol car was stationed on the Treptow side of the bridge. The initiative insists the bridge can and must be reopened immediately, and demands that residents be involved in all further planning from the very beginning. Further actions have been announced. A structural assessment of the bridge is not expected until the end of 2026. The nearby Ernst-Heilmann-Steg, roughly 100 metres away, remains open to pedestrians and cyclists as an alternative crossing.
