Walter Koenig, Star Trek's Chekov, Dies at 90

Walter Koenig, who played the beloved Russian navigator Pavel Chekov in the original Star Trek television series and its seven films, died on Sunday 25 October 2026 at his North Hollywood home, aged 90.

Walter Koenig, the actor best known as Ensign Pavel Chekov, died Sunday at his North Hollywood home, surrounded by his daughter and niece. He was 90. Zachery McGinnis of Galactic Productions announced the news on Facebook the following Monday, saying Koenig died of natural causes.

Born in Chicago on September 14, 1936, Koenig joined Star Trek for its second season in 1967 as the young Russian navigator aboard the USS Enterprise, remaining with the show through its third season on NBC. He then appeared as Chekov in all seven of the original Star Trek films — from Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979 through Star Trek: Generations in 1994, the latter of which introduced Patrick Stewart's Jean-Luc Picard as the new Enterprise captain.

His death leaves George Takei and William Shatner, who played Captain James T. Kirk, as the sole surviving main cast members of the original series. Takei, who played Lt. Hikaru Sulu, paid tribute on Monday, writing: "My heart is heavy. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades."

Beyond Star Trek, Koenig built a distinguished career that included recurring as the villainous Alfred Bester in a dozen episodes of the space drama Babylon 5 from 1994 to 1998. His most recent screen credit was the short film Mr. Fleischmann, which earned him the Platinum Award for Best Actor at the 2026 Independent Shorts Awards.
