Budget Delivers 'Devolution Revolution' for London, Says Mayor Khan
Mayor Sadiq Khan has welcomed the Budget as "a really positive and significant day for London," calling it the largest devolution of powers to the capital seen in a generation and praising plans to bring cross-channel rail services to Stratford International for the first time.
Mayor Sadiq Khan described the Budget as a landmark moment for London, saying it amounts to "a new devolution revolution" — the largest devolution of powers to the capital in a generation. A central plank of the deal is giving London the ability to keep more of the money it raises, which Khan said would allow billions more to be invested in transformational infrastructure projects, including the West London Orbital rail line, the Bakerloo Line Extension, and the Euston knowledge quarter development, as well as supporting tens of thousands of new homes, jobs and economic growth. The Mayor also welcomed a government commitment to bring cross-channel rail services to Stratford International, which he said would make the station "truly international for the first time" and open up significant opportunities for jobs, investment and tourism. Khan said the government understands the scale of ambition needed where previous governments had failed, and described the devolution settlement as something he had been calling for over many years. The Budget also included support for energy bills — which the Mayor linked to ongoing economic pressures from the conflict in the Middle East — alongside new investment to tackle rough sleeping, build more affordable homes, and help young Londoners access skills training and employment opportunities. Khan said the overall package showed a genuine commitment to building a fairer, safer, greener and more prosperous London.
