Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan drop retro 'expectations' remix with David Byrne video
Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan released a reworked version of 'expectations' alongside a 1980s game-show style music video co-starring David Byrne, lighting up charts and timelines on the weekend of 17 October 2026.
The fourth single from Olivia Rodrigo's album 'You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl so in Love' arrived on 15 October 2026 but exploded across social media over the weekend of 17 October, when the accompanying music video began trending worldwide. The remix of 'expectations' features Chappell Roan adding a new verse and a reworked chorus that reframes the song around a lesbian relationship. The video, directed in a 1970s–80s pastiche, imagines a fictional television game show called 'The Big Expectations Show' with Rodrigo and Roan competing as contestants and Talking Heads frontman David Byrne playing the host. Variety, Consequence and The Hollywood Reporter all led their music pages with the collaboration, while fans debated whether the drop was timed to compete with Taylor Swift's surprise acoustic and piano versions of 'Patient Zero', which hit streaming the same weekend. The remix is released via Interscope Records and is Rodrigo's first official duet with Roan, following months of mutual praise between the two singers on tour.
