'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' crowned 2026's biggest film as it holds US box-office crown
By 17 October 2026 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' had become the highest-grossing film of the year worldwide, holding the top of the US chart ahead of 'The Odyssey' with roughly $2.5 billion in global takings.
Entertainment trade coverage on 17 October 2026 was dominated by 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day', which Variety and Box Office Mojo confirmed had officially become the year's highest-grossing release with around $2.5 billion in worldwide ticket sales. Marvel Studios' Spider-Man reboot had already set a domestic opening-weekend record of about $360 million, outpacing 'Avengers: Endgame', and became the fastest film ever to pass $400 million in North America, in just four days, and the second-fastest to cross $1 billion worldwide, in six. By its fourth weekend it was still earning $39 million in the US and holding first place at the domestic box office, with Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' trailing at roughly $1.7 billion in global receipts. Analysts said the film's unusually long legs — helped by positive word of mouth, Imax and 4DX bookings, and a strong China release — pushed Sony and Disney forecasts into uncharted territory for a Spider-Man picture. The studio has already greenlit a direct sequel and a spin-off series, both scheduled to shoot in London and Atlanta in 2027.
