Thailand Launches 'Gateway to Thailand' Overland Road-Trip Guidebook for Border Travellers
Thailand's Tourism Authority unveiled a new guidebook on 28 October 2026 offering ten curated road trips from nine land border crossings, aimed at drawing visitors from Laos and Malaysia deeper into lesser-known Thai provinces.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) officially launched the 'Gateway to Thailand' travel guidebook on 28 October 2026, targeting overland visitors arriving by private vehicle — particularly from Laos and Malaysia. The guide presents ten road-trip routes each starting from one of nine border crossings: Nong Khai, Mukdahan, Nakhon Phanom, Bueng Kan, Chong Mek, Sadao, Wang Prachan, Betong and Su-ngai Kolok. Together the routes thread through 19 provinces, highlighting stops that showcase local identity across seven themes: nature, culture, faith, gastronomy, history, community living and outdoor adventure. TAT developed the project after identifying the under-exploited potential of land borders to drive regional travel and help distribute tourism revenue into local communities across Thailand. The initiative is designed to turn border checkpoints into genuine gateways for exploration rather than mere transit points. The guidebook is available as a printed publication in Thai and English, and as a digital e-book in five languages: Thai, English, Malay, Chinese and Lao. TAT is promoting the itineraries across online and offline platforms, working with travel bloggers and influencers to bring the routes to life as real-world inspiration.
