Agoda: Food-Led 'Snackpacking' Drives Youth Travel Surge Across Indonesian Cities

Travel platform Agoda says food-driven 'snackpacking' is fuelling a sharp rise in young Indonesians booking domestic trips, with accommodation searches for Manado up 214 per cent and Jakarta up 200 per cent year-on-year for October.

Agoda released data on 27 October 2026 showing that 'snackpacking' — travel centred on seeking out local street snacks and regional specialities — is rapidly growing among young Indonesian travellers. Accommodation searches for October 2026 stays surged across multiple cities versus the same period in 2025: Manado led at 214 per cent, followed by Jakarta at 200 per cent, Medan at 194 per cent and Bandung at 189 per cent. Other cities showing notable interest included Solo, Surabaya, Palembang, Bali, Semarang and Yogyakarta. Each destination offers signature snacks: Manado is known for klappertaart, a popular sweet treat with Dutch colonial heritage whose name derives from "klapper", the Dutch word for coconut; Jakarta celebrates kerak telor, a savoury Betawi glutinous-rice omelette; and Medan draws travellers with bika ambon and other rich Sumatran flavours. According to Indonesia's Ministry of Tourism, snackpacking is popular among young Indonesians who enjoy exploring local culture and discovering Instagram-worthy snack experiences. Agoda describes it as an authentic and relatively affordable way to discover a region through its local snacks and specialities. The platform offers more than 6 million holiday properties and over 130,000 flight routes to help travellers plan such trips.
