Glee Reboot Officially Ordered at Disney+ and Hulu
Ryan Murphy's hit musical drama Glee is coming back, with Disney+ and Hulu formally greenlighting a reboot of the Fox series that ran six seasons from 2009 to 2015.
Disney+ and Hulu have greenlit a reboot of Glee, the musical dramedy that aired on Fox for six seasons from 2009 to 2015. The new series will be produced by 20th Television. Creator Ryan Murphy confirmed he has written a reboot script alongside original collaborators Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan. Murphy also said he had been in contact with around ten original cast members, all of whom were enthusiastic about the idea. No casting has been confirmed, however, and the network has so far shared no details beyond the production company and platforms.
The original series followed a show choir in Lima, Ohio, and became a major cultural phenomenon for its sometimes controversial handling of topics including sexuality, race, disability and mental health. Its music catalog continues to draw 4.1 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
Some original cast members have publicly weighed in on the prospect of returning. Lea Michele told E! News she would be happy to join a reboot, saying, "I will follow Ryan wherever he goes." Chris Colfer acknowledged the idea would be complicated in the wake of Naya Rivera's death but said he would consider it. Rivera, who was part of the original cast, died in 2020 at age 33, drowning in a lake while saving her young son. She was the third cast member to die: Cory Monteith passed away from an overdose in 2013 while the show was still on air, and Mark Salling died by suicide in 2018 after pleading guilty to possession of child pornography. No premiere date or episode count has been announced.
