CDU Invites SPD and Greens to Talks on Berlin's Current Situation — Left Party Left Out

Berlin CDU state party chairman Stefan Evers has invited the SPD and Greens to talks scheduled for 29 October to discuss the current political situation, as the three left-leaning parties pursue a red-green-red coalition — the Linke, the election winner, was not invited.

Berlin CDU state party chairman Stefan Evers has invited the leadership of the SPD and Greens to a meeting scheduled for 29 October — the same day the new Abgeordnetenhaus holds its constitutive session. A CDU spokesperson said the invitation was prompted by "the concerning course of the coalition soundings" and upcoming decisions in the weeks ahead, adding that both the invitation and any discussions would remain confidential.

Both parties accepted but were quick to rule out a coalition dimension. SPD state chair Bettina König said the parties "govern this state together and have plenty to clarify," while the Greens described the meeting as dialogue about managing the transition period constructively — not exploratory coalition talks. According to dpa sources, a supplementary budget is expected to be among the topics, given Berlin's strained finances.

The Linke, which won the Berlin state election on 20 September with 25.7% of the vote, was notably excluded from Evers' invitation. The CDU came second with 18.8%, ahead of the AfD (16.3%), Greens (14.3%) and SPD (12.1%). The Greens and SPD have already voted to begin formal coalition negotiations for a red-green-red government; the Linke holds its party congress on 31 October to decide. That coalition would command 91 seats — 14 above the absolute majority. A CDU-Greens-SPD alternative is arithmetically possible but would sit only 2 seats above the majority threshold and faces strong internal resistance in both the SPD and Greens. Evers said the CDU's "hand remains extended for an alliance of responsibility and reason."
