London Bus and Tram Fares to Rise in November for First Time in Three Years

Transport for London has confirmed that bus and tram fares across the capital will increase in November 2026, ending a three-year freeze and affecting millions of daily commuters.

Transport for London announced that bus and tram fares across Greater London will go up in November 2026, the first increase since March 2023. Mayor Sadiq Khan had extended the fare freeze multiple times, framing it as cost-of-living support for Londoners, but TfL confirmed the freeze could not be maintained indefinitely given rising operational costs. The exact new per-journey prices were set out in the announcement; the rise affects every bus and tram route in the network, including Hopper-fare journeys (unlimited bus-to-bus transfers within one hour). Contactless and Oyster card users pay the lowest fares, while cash remains unavailable on buses. Concessions — including free travel for under-18s, older Londoners and disabled Freedom Pass holders — are unaffected. The change comes as TfL continues major investment in fleet decarbonisation, with an all-electric and hydrogen bus fleet the stated goal. Consumer groups noted the increase would add to household bills already squeezed by higher mortgage rates. The November date gives passengers roughly a month's notice to adjust travel budgets. TfL insisted the rise remains below inflation and that London's bus fares are among the most competitive of any major European city.
