Bread Ahead Wins Its Borough Market Battle
Popular bakery Bread Ahead has secured a new lease at Borough Market after facing eviction earlier this autumn, with the market citing the business as having grown "too successful" for its original mission.
Bread Ahead, the Borough Market bakery famous for its crème brûlée doughnuts, has had its lease extended after Borough Market served it with a non-renewal notice in September 2026. The market had argued that Bread Ahead had become "too successful," expanding beyond the scope of what the market intended for its independent business spaces. Bread Ahead announced the resolution on Instagram on 20 October, writing: "We'll be looking for a new place eventually but let's take it a day at a time." The bakery, which opened at Borough Market in 2013, has since expanded to additional London sites at King's Cross, South Kensington and Wembley, as well as internationally. Earlier this month it opened its first owner-operated location in Harpenden, Hertfordshire, with a New York opening planned for November. The dispute attracted widespread public sympathy for the bakery.
