'The Notebook' Musical to Inaugurate the Newly Renamed Judi Dench Theatre
A West End musical adaptation of Nicholas Sparks' 'The Notebook' will be the first production at the newly renamed Judi Dench Theatre — formerly the Shaftesbury Theatre — with previews from March 2027 and a run through December 2027.
A musical adaptation of Nicholas Sparks' 1996 novel 'The Notebook' will have its European premiere in London's West End, becoming the inaugural production at the newly renamed Judi Dench Theatre — formerly the Shaftesbury Theatre. The show follows a young couple separated by class and war in 1940s America, a story that first found wide audiences through Sparks' novel and then through the 2004 film starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. The musical itself ran on Broadway for approximately nine months before heading to London. It is written by playwright Bekah Brunstetter and singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson, and co-directed by Michael Greif — best known for Dear Evan Hansen — and Schele Williams, whose revival of The Wiz has been a notable hit. Although the production is nominally based on the book rather than the film, reviewers have noted it faithfully recreates memorable moments from the movie, including the iconic reunion scene in the rain between protagonists Noah and Allie. Casting has yet to be announced. Previews begin on 10 March 2027, with the full booking period running through 11 December 2027.
