Mayor Sadiq Khan Takes His Seat in the House of Lords as Lord Khan of Tooting
Sir Sadiq Khan, three-times Mayor of London, has been made a life peer by King Charles III on the nomination of Prime Minister Keir Starmer, taking the title Lord Khan of Tooting while continuing to serve as Mayor.
Sir Sadiq Khan, the three-times Mayor of London, formally received a life peerage and is now known as Lord Khan of Tooting, taking his seat in the House of Lords. He was one of 26 new peers approved by the King on the nomination of Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Khan is the first serving Mayor of London to hold a peerage simultaneously. As Londonist noted, this makes him both Mayor of London and a Lord, but he is emphatically not the Lord Mayor of London — that is a separate, year-long ceremonial role based in the City of London with ambassadorial duties. Khan still has almost two years remaining of his current mayoral term and has hinted he may seek a fourth term. It is not yet clear how active a legislator he will be in the Lords while continuing his City Hall responsibilities.
