Berlin Delicatessen Reclaims Its Historic Name "Butter Lindner" After 20 Years

The Berlin fine-food institution dropped 'Butter' from its name in 2006 when expanding to Hamburg, but since customers never stopped calling it 'Butter Lindner' — even newcomers — management decided to make the name official again, alongside a refreshed gold-on-navy logo, across all roughly 45 locations.

The Berlin delicatessen Lindner, which traces its roots to a small market stand in the Schmargendorf district where barrel butter was sold by hand, has officially reclaimed the name it had carried from the 1950s to 2006: 'Butter Lindner.' The company dropped 'Butter' from its trading name twenty years ago when it expanded production and opened its first location in Hamburg, reflecting the shift from retailer to manufacturer. But as CEO Nikolaj Sterkel noted, Berliners never accepted the change: customers, even those newly arrived in the city, consistently called the shop 'Butter Lindner' regardless of the official signage. The rebranding also brings a new logo — the same recognizable gold lettering on a dark navy background but with more dynamic, contemporary letterforms. The chain now operates approximately 45 locations. The move is largely a recognition of cultural reality: the old name had embedded itself so deeply in Berlin vocabulary that even the company's marketing efforts could not dislodge it.
