Camden High Street to Be Permanently Pedestrianised After 18-Month Trial

Camden Council confirmed on 28 October that Camden High Street will become permanently pedestrian-only, with 57 per cent of consultation respondents in support, following an 18-month trial.

Camden Council announced on 28 October 2026 that Camden High Street will be made permanently pedestrian-only, following the success of an 18-month trial that began in May 2025. The pedestrianised zone runs from outside Camden Town Underground station to the junction with Hawley Crescent, near The Elephant's Head pub. The announcement came just one day after Oxford Street's own permanent vehicle closure, reflecting a wider shift towards pedestrianisation across central London. A public consultation found 57 per cent of respondents supported permanent pedestrianisation, with 51 per cent of local residents agreeing. The council acknowledged concerns about bus services and announced a trial bus lane on Kentish Town Road to improve northbound journeys for those affected. Camden Market draws approximately 250,000 visitors per week. Councillor James Slater described Camden as 'an important shopping and transport hub for local residents as well as being an internationally recognised destination.' The council also plans further consultation in spring on a potential extension of the pedestrianised zone towards Camden Lock Bridge.
