Angel Tube Station Will Be Exit-Only at Weekends From 2027

Transport for London announced that Angel Underground station will allow exits but no entries on weekends and bank holidays from early 2027, as its four escalators — some nearly 35 years old — become too unreliable to maintain in full operation.

Transport for London has announced that Angel Underground station will become exit-only on weekends and bank holidays from early 2027, to allow essential maintenance work on its failing escalators. The station has four escalators arranged in two pairs: one pair running between the ticket hall and the mid-concourse level — the longest escalators on the entire tube network — and another pair from mid-concourse to platform level. Some are nearly 35 years old. Richard Jones, TfL's director of asset performance delivery for London Underground, described them as 'becoming less reliable and increasingly difficult to maintain.' Rather than closing the station entirely for up to a year, TfL opted for a phased approach: weekday service would continue normally while weekend and bank holiday passengers could exit but not enter. An exact start date in early 2027 has not yet been confirmed, and design work for replacing the escalators is set to begin in autumn. TfL recommended that weekend travellers use buses to reach King's Cross St Pancras, Old Street or Highbury & Islington stations as alternatives. Jones said: 'I understand that any disruption to the station will have an impact on customers, businesses and the local community and we will do all we can to work closely with local stakeholders to ensure that we mitigate the disruption as much as possible.'
