OpenAI unveils GPT-6.1 Sol at DevDay 2026
At its 1 October DevDay, OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Sol, a cheaper, faster model priced at $2 per million input tokens and aimed at agentic coding and computer use.
OpenAI used its DevDay 2026 developer conference on 1 October 2026 to launch GPT-6.1 Sol, a mid-tier successor that compresses much of the flagship GPT-6 Astra's capability into a markedly cheaper package. Priced at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, Sol undercuts earlier Astra pricing by roughly a fifth while retaining near-Astra performance on benchmarks for agentic coding, autonomous computer use and long-horizon professional work such as research drafting and spreadsheet manipulation. OpenAI said Sol is the default model for most ChatGPT users and the recommended backbone for API-based agents, with context handling, tool use and workspace integrations tuned for enterprise deployments. The company also rolled out admin-console controls for plugins and marketplaces inside ChatGPT Enterprise and EDU, allowing workspace owners to curate which third-party extensions their users can run. Alongside the launch, OpenAI confirmed it had parted ways with three safety researchers over alleged mishandling of sensitive information, and said it had warned more than 100 organisations about unauthorised activity tied to its agents after reviewing roughly 50 petabytes of data.
